THE LITURGY OF BAPTISM

Dear Beloved Members of St. Gregory's,

In our weekly "Making a Difference" stories we highlight individuals or ministries that truly shape our life in Christ and "make a difference." This week I wanted to highlight our words of worship-- our liturgy-- and in particular our liturgy of baptism. Last week we baptized five children. It was one of those moments that felt like heaven bled into earth as each of these children were touched by water and filled with the Holy Spirit. In the baptismal liturgy, we say that the baptized person is "sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked as Christ's own, forever." Note this word, "forever." This is not a trial period with an expiration date. This is not something that requires a periodic review and a certification to continue. No, this a moment where we proclaim this child belongs to Christ forever. While the cross made on the child's forehead with oil blessed by our bishop may not be seen by our eyes, Christ will always see this mark of eternal love and belonging. This is beautiful. This is heavenly. This is true. And this makes a difference, forever. Thanks be to God!

In Christ,

Andrew+
