WOMEN & PHILANTHROPY

There was a feeling of “family reunion” when more than 40 St. Gregory’s women (and a few men) gathered on Thursday, February 24 in the Hamister Family Courtyard for the Women and Philanthropy event. It was wonderful to see friends and to share social “catching up” time in the courtyard, with the glowing fountain and clear skies, before sitting at the beautifully set tables for the program. Thank you to Joanne Stanley for the wine, and to Rebecca Sorenson and her team for preparing the venue and providing the delicious small bites.

After Fr. Andrew began the program with prayer, Laurie Kirkegaard, our capital campaign consultant, moderated the program. She first shared some data about the general nature of philanthropic giving in the United States, including that the greatest percentage of giving was from individuals, and most of that giving is to religious organizations. She introduced each of the panelists and asked each some questions about their personal experiences in giving, including how they have managed to balance family, work and church. Then Laurie turned to the audience and asked several members to share their stories about giving to St. Gregory’s. Some surprising answers, and lots of laughing, created a wonderful sparkle to the evening.

I was so touched by the personal stories, the spirit of fun, and the love for St. Gregory’s – it was life-giving water after a walk through the Covid desert! Thank you to Jim Sorensen, Louis Birro, and Jim Kirkegaard for technical help, including recording the event. Thank you to the panelists, Laurie, and all the participants for helping to create a beautiful evening.
