An Update from the Counseling Center from Rev. Elizabeth Pankey-Warren – EMDR in Therapy
Have you heard about EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing?
EMDR is a proven, research based therapy designed to reduce or eliminate pain caused by traumatic experiences. Trauma can be defined as a one time stressful event, or the culmination of several small repeated events. When these painful experiences happen, the memory of them sometimes gets stuck in the body and mind. This can affect how one see themselves in relation to the world they live in, the emotions they feel, and how they react. EMDR combines talk therapy, deep breathing and bilateral stimulation of the right and left hemispheres of the brain to replicate what happens in REM deep sleep, another way we process and resolve painful events in our lives. EMDR is been shown in research to be an effective therapeutic treatment and is recommended by the American Psychiatric Association and the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
