friday-camp55 (2)Registration is now open for St. Gregory’s Summer Music Academy–the premier music day camp in Boca Raton! The 2016 Summer Music Academy proudly offers instruction in piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, choral singing, and contemporary music for teens – something for every student of every age! In each discipline, we welcome intermediate to advanced students.
This year’s academy runs August 1-5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We take a “learn by doing” approach, with students spending the majority of the day playing their instruments and honing their voices with guidance from instructors. To round out the day camp experience, students also receive lessons in music theory and music history. Students also get performance experience: on Sunday, August 7, Academy attendees are encouraged to participate in a group performance during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship service at St. Gregory’s. We encourage you to sign up early to guarantee a spot for your child!

About the Academy

The Summer Music Academy at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Boca Raton is a dynamic and comprehensive music day camp for elementary to high school age students. Our mission is to encourage and educate our attendees in their musical talents, help them grow as young musicians, and feed their love of music. With its nationally-recognized instructors, private and group lessons, and welcoming environment, the Academy helps young musicians take their talents to the next level in just one week.
Founded by the Rev. Angela M. Cortiñas, Assistant Rector at St. Gregory’s, and directed by Timothy Brumfield, Director of Music Ministry, Organist, and Choirmaster at St. Gregory’s, the Academy is now in its fourth year. With attendance growing each year, we continue to expand and enhance our programming.

Nationally-Recognized Instructors

Every year, we invite respected professional musicians and music teachers to our Summer Music Academy. Returning this year is pianist/vocalist Mary Beth Mankel, a leading classical and contemporary pedagogy expert in teaching children and teens. Leading the Academy is Timothy Brumfield, Director of Music Ministry, Organist, and Choirmaster at St. Gregory’s. Tim is a member of the Grammy Awardwinning Paul Winter Consort since 1998 and has performed widely around the world. Tim is also an Honorary Fellow of the National College of Music in London. He has collaborated with such renowned artists as the late pianist Dave Brubeck, the late drummer Max Roach, legendary folk singer Judy Collins, the American Spiritual Ensemble, The American Brass Quintet, jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and many others.

Individual and Group Sessions

To maximize your child’s learning, we structure our Summer Music Academy to include individual lessons and group sessions. One-on-one lessons provide the personalized instruction your young musician needs, while group sessions provide a chance for “jam sessions” and help your child get comfortable performing in a group setting.

Students are typically separated by age and ability into small groups that rotate between lessons in piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, and choral singing. Teenage attendees may also participate in contemporary music sessions, including jazz and rock. Individual lessons are worked in throughout, while group class sessions are held each day.

Note: snacks and beverages are provided, but please send lunch for your child.
