While the Choir is on summer vacation, we have scheduled a variety of beautiful and inspiring music and musicians. To date we’ve heard our own soprano Paulina Arango, the Flute Consort consisting of Maria Provost, and Lori Snow, French Hornist Tim Beasor, soprano Catherine Gaines, violinist Michael O’Gieblyn, baritone Chase Wheeler, and this past Sunday pianist and tenor, Jonathan Cornell.  This Sunday we will once again welcome our Schola Singers, Ms. Paulina Arango, Mr. Jonathan Cornell, Ms. Jessica Reed Hitchcock, and Mr. Chase Wheeler, for a special choral music treat at the 10 am service!  Jessica serves as a choral section leader of the Choir of Bethesda-by-the-Sea and Paulina, Jonathan and Chase serve as choral section leaders of the Choir of St. Gregory’s.  This Sunday’s Choral mass setting, Missa Brevis, Mass for The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, was composed by me during my tenure as Cathedral Organist at St. John the Divine and was debuted at Lincoln Center in 2016 when the composition was performed in concert by the National Chorale at David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall.)   In addition the Schola will be singing an enchanting three-part setting of the Ubi Caritas composed by British composer Philip Moore who served as Organist and Master of the Choristers at the Cathedrals of Guilford and York Minster with prior appointments at Canterbury Cathedral and Eaton College. Mr. Moore most recently held the position of President of the Royal College of Organists.   Also scheduled is a beautiful three-part setting of the Ave Verum composed by the British composer Grayston Ives who taught at Magdalen College, Oxford as recently as 2009, and is a member of the famed choral ensemble The King’s Singers.

We are also chanting the Nicene Creed and the Prayers of the People on Sunday.  As you chant these ancient and modern prayers, allow the transformative power of chant to speak anew these texts in your heart and mind as if being uttered for the first time.  If you are interested in joining the Choir of St. Gregory’s, please contact Tim Brumfield, Director of Music Ministries.
